No More Parties

lyrics

She’d slit her wrists
Sunday night
behind the sheds
at Deepdene station.
She'd used a glass
with the
Baccardi breezer.
This was just after
Jonno had
beaten her
for the hundredth time
The rum was still
in her blood
as it ran out - hot,
black – small-town girl
out
in the ‘burbs
She'd smacked it
hard against the
dark, a wall or
something –
it broke – dug in…
In the beginning.
It had been dull
but fine.
Bright – and good at netball
A trial
for England
under-16s.
Then she met Janie –
She, she –
couldn’t explain.
Loved her, wanted to be her?
College stories,
high-school games.
Janie had introduced Jonno to her at a club.
He was great – had a baseball cap, shooter, tabs, everything.
Really, really cool.
He said:
“This is the West End, beautiful friend.”
She followed; drinking. He began
beating. Fucking Janie, her
fucking friend.
Work to live, live to drink –
A veil, falling.
Apart. Her flesh – the pallour of soiled meringue.
Up inside her – and the warts scared her.
He’d injected her with disease.
And a slave to alcohol.
Desperation, bravado or joie de vivre. Clutching innocence.
Sick – almost dead – Jonno had beaten her for the hundredth time.
And so she walked.
And found herself
behind the back
of Deepdene station.
A slow zoom, back, away. A speck of dust
in the centre of my lens.
The image winks – has gone away.
Make a friend of darkness before it makes an enemy of you.
